AGS Creates A Room With A View!
AGS Home Improvements recently proved that you can’t beat a room with a view when it installed vertical sliding windows on Newquay’s Great Western Hotel.
Using Eurocell’s PVC-u profile system, AGS was contracted by St Austell Brewery to replace the original timber vertical sliding windows that had deteriorated beyond repair.
The brewery’s brief required the replacement of the windows with a product that reflected the traditional style of the building, but which overcame issues associated with timber. AGS’s PVC-u vertical sliding windows, fabricated using Eurocell profiles, were considered to best meet the hotel’s brief for low maintenance, along with excellent weatherproofing and thermal performance. The hotel’s aim was to provide the highest levels of accommodation and comfort for the guests.
Although the refurbishment involved all aspects of the hotel, particular attention was paid to the design of the windows as the Victorian building is of significant historical and architectural interest. It was therefore essential that AGS’s vertical sliding windows were sympathetic to the original design and style, as well as meeting with the approval of the Local Planning Authority.
The Great Western Hotel sits in the heart of Newquay in a prominent cliff top position. This meant that the windows had to be able to perform all the year round, especially with the severe weather from the Atlantic Ocean being only a few metres away.
Vertical sliders have sometimes scored slightly lower on thermal performance compared to plain casements, simply because of the increased number of moving parts and exposed edges. However, because of the highly engineered profiles used on the Eurocell slider, combined with 24mm doubled glazed units, the window is capable of achieving excellent weather and thermal performance. BBA-approved, Eurocell’s vertical sliding profile system features an extremely smooth sliding mechanism that incorporates an anti-jemmy security bar.
Paul Symons, Contracts Manager at AGS, explains: “The new vertical sliders look absolutely stunning on this hotel and we have already had comments from the management about how much warmer it makes the rooms feel. This is a well known, historic building and we were delighted to be involved in its refurbishment.”
The Eurocell vertical sliding system is available in sizes up to 1600 x 3000mm and has equal sightlines to create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing window system. Cleaning the window is extremely easy as both panes have a tilting mechanism on each sash, allowing easy and safe access from inside the building. For customers looking for a truly traditional look, the window is available with Georgian bar fixings and decorative horns.
