The expertise available to you from Eurocell means that we can offer detailed guidance on best practice when surveying any property, helping to ensure all windows and doors are fabricated accurately for a hassle-free installation.

Accurate and thorough surveying is essential, as it can save time, inconvenience and money at the installation stage. It is the surveyor’s responsibility to determine that structural openings are in a good state of repair and to provide the correct dimensions for window or door fabrication.

Here are a few basic tips for on-site surveying:

  1. Check surrounding brickwork for defects
  2. Take several measurements across the opening to find the narrowest point. Deduct 10mm from this measurement to give the finished width of the window or door frame (allowing 5mm on each side for expansion). Measure the height of the opening in the same way.
  3. Make a note of any existing cill and establish whether this is to be included in the overall frame dimension (i.e. stone cill). If the cill is to be replaced, make a note of the depth of the existing reveal to determine which cill size is most appropriate (i.e. 180mm, 150mm or 85mm).
  4. Check the squareness of the opening. It is important that the diagonals are no more than 10mm different. If they are, remedial work may need to be carried out on the brickwork to ensure the opening is square.
  5. Determine who is responsible for re-plastering, fitting of curtain rails, blinds and other fittings.
