| Committed to sustainabilityEurocell is firmly committed to continuously minimising the impact of its activities and products on the environment
At Eurocell, we continuously strive to improve our environmental performance and reduce our carbon footprint. Recently, our environmental management system has achieved the widely recognised ISO14001 accreditation and we have introduced advanced, thermally efficient reinforcement profiles made from 100% recycled PVC-U into our product range.
We re-use virtually 100% of our waste product in the manufacturing process. This amounts to arround 3000 tonnes of recycled UPVC each year. Plus, we buy waste product from other sources for recycling. The result is virtually zero Eurocell production waste going to landfill.
A-rated for environmental performance
PVC-u Windows
For many years PVC-U windows have been recognised as extremely durable, low-maintenance and energy efficient. However, with recent advances in recycling, UPVC windows have now achieved the highest rating possible in the latest Building Research Establishment (BRE) Green Guide to Specification (June 2008). In the guide, PVC-U windows received an A rating for residential buildings and an A+ rating for commercial projects.
What’s more, out of 100 window systems tested for thermal energy-efficiency performance by the British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC), 93 achieved the highest ‘A’ rating, 88 of which were PVC-U windows.
PVC-U Cladding
For use in domestic applications, UPVC cladding, when used on load-bearing masonry has also been awarded an A+ rating in the 2008 BRE Green Guide to Specification. This gives it a superior rating to copper, which has been used on some ‘Code For Sustainable Homes’ level 6 projects, widely considered to be the vanguard of sustainable construction.
Recycling and waste reduction
In the UK, recycling performance in the PVC-U industry has improved dramatically. In 2005, 7,000 tonnes of PVC-U were recycled – in 2007 that figure had risen six fold, to 42,000 tonnes.
Perhaps more importantly, latest research has shown that 95% of ‘post-consumer’ or end-of-life PVC-U windows can be recycled. Eurocell has its own post–consumer recycling facilities, for cradle–to–the–grave PVC-U processing. When combined with an initial product life for a PVC-U window of up to 35 years (BFRC), the combined effect is hundreds of years of re-use with minimal impact on the environment.
Long-term environmental commitment
Eurocell is at the forefront of sustainable developments in the PVC-U industry. Our environmental policy commits us to ongoing improvements that will help to reduce carbon emissions from transport and energy use, improve energy efficiency within our business and offer more energy-efficient products to our customers, as well as reducing waste and promoting recycling.
