Why your conservatory is too hot in summer: Causes and solutions
With plenty of natural light and views into your garden, a conservatory should be the perfect place to enjoy the summer weather. But some older conservatories have issues with temperature regulation which means it becomes sweltering as soon as summer rolls around. Instead of a relaxing retreat, your conservatory may become unbearable to sit in.
Here are some possible causes and how to keep a conservatory cool in the summer.
Why is my conservatory too hot?
A conservatory can transform your home offering you additional living space to work, exercise or relax.
But you want to be able to enjoy it all year round – whether it be meals with friends and family, yoga or high-energy exercise, or as a place to read and unwind.

What can you do with a conservatory? 11 different uses
Installing a new conservatory is a great way to extend your living space, creating an extra room to entertain guests, a playroom for the kids, or simply a place to relax with a morning coffee.
A modern conservatory can be used all year round, without worrying that it'll be too hot or cold, or even damp.
Like any room in your home, the colours, fabrics and furniture you choose will influence your mood and how you use the space. You may want it to flow with the rest of your house, using the same flooring and wall paint. Or you could use your outdoor space as a backdrop, introducing indoor plants that complement your outdoor ones, and adding rustic furnishings and accessories.

Do you need planning permission for a garden room?
In most cases, you don’t need planning permission for a garden room, but there are a few rules around its size, purpose and location. We’ve put together this guide to tell you all you need to know about garden room planning permission.
Garden room planning permission
Whether you plan to use your garden room as a home gym, office or craft room – it’s classed as an outbuilding, covered by Permitted Development Rights, which means you don’t typically need planning permission.
But there are a few conditions:
- Your garden room can’t be built in front of your property
- It has to be single storey
- It shouldn’t cover more than 50% of your garden
- It cannot be used as a self contained living accommodation

From damp conservatory to stunning extension: A 10-day transformation project
When Lisa and Alex first viewed their three-bed detached home in 2019, they fell for it straight away. It had everything they were looking for… plus a little bit more. Lisa tells us: ‘A conservatory had never been on our wishlist, but we quickly started planning all the different ways we could use the extra space.’
Unfortunately, they quickly discovered the conservatory wasn’t as useful as they’d hoped. In winter it was cold and damp, with so much condensation it soon developed a mould problem. In summer it was the opposite, becoming so hot that it was virtually unusable: ‘We never spent any time in there and it became half boot room, half dumping ground.’
Alex and Lisa aren’t alone in discovering the downsides of older, poorly insulated conservatories. While conservatories were a desirable home addition in the 90s and 00s, analysis from Rightmove points to a sharp decline in popularity.
Conservatory roof leaking: Causes & how to fix
If you can see drops of water falling from your conservatory roof, areas of damp or musty smells, there’s an issue. While a conservatory should be a peaceful space to relax and enjoy nature, leaking conservatory roofs are more common in older conservatories and can really damage your interior.
This guide explains why your conservatory roof could be leaking, how to fix it and what to do if it’s beyond repair. It could be time for a conservatory replacement.
Why is my conservatory roof leaking?
If you have spotted damp patches on your walls or flooring, it could be because of a leaking conservatory roof. A leaking roof is more common in older conservatories, especially those with a polycarbonate roof, since most are designed to last just 10-15 years.
