The Ultimate Decking Buying Guide

30 May 2025

Not sure where to start when it comes to buying new decking?

This guide will walk you through the key things to consider when it comes to buying and planning decking. We’ll cover the different materials, types, how to plan your project, and even how to keep your decking looking its best once it’s installed.

You’ll also get an overview of Eurocell’s composite decking range and the accessories that help complete the job.

Materials and types

Decking materials

Choosing the right material for your deck is the first important decision to make. Composite decking has emerged as the leading choice for homeowners looking for the perfect balance of aesthetics, performance, and minimal upkeep.

Composite decking combines wood fibres with recycled plastic to create a superior alternative to traditional timber. This innovative material delivers the warm, natural look of wood without the ongoing maintenance headaches that come with timber decking.

See the table for a breakdown below, or read our guide comparing composite and wood decking to learn more.

Types of decking

If you’ve decided on composite over timber, the next step is choosing the type of board that suits your space and budget. There are a few key differences to be aware of, especially when it comes to hollow vs solid boards, and capped vs uncapped finishes.

Hollow vs solid boards

Hollow boards are lighter, easier to handle and usually more affordable. They’re ideal for most garden decking projects and a great choice if you’re planning to install the decking yourself.
Solid boards are denser and more robust, offering a sturdier feel underfoot. They’re well suited to raised decks or areas with heavy footfall and often have a more timber-like appearance.

Capped vs uncapped boards

  • Capped boards have a protective outer layer that provides extra resistance to stains, fading and moisture. They tend to keep their colour for longer and offer a slightly more premium finish. If you want extra peace of mind over the years, capped boards are a strong choice.
  • Uncapped boards don’t have this outer coating but still deliver the core benefits of composite. They're tough, low maintenance, and more affordable, making them a great fit for most garden decking projects. With regular cleaning, they’ll continue to look good for years.

What else will you need?

While the decking boards are what you see and walk on, a successful, long-lasting deck relies on a few other key components that form its hidden structure and provide the finishing touches:

  • Decking joists: These form the base structure that supports your deck. They are available in plastic and timber, though timber joists can be prone to rotting and decaying over time.
  • Fascia boards: Use fascia boards to cover the edges of your decking and give it a clean, professional look. These boards also help protect the substructure from the elements.
  • Edging and trims: Add a sleek finish with edging and trims to cover gaps and provide a polished edge around your deck.
  • Balustrades and railings: If your deck is raised or you simply want extra style and safety, balustrades and railings are a great option. Choose from a variety of designs to suit your deck’s look.
  • Screws, clips and fasteners: If you’ve chosen decking that uses a hidden clip system, you’ll need the right clips for installation. These clips help secure the boards in place while keeping the surface free of visible screws for a cleaner finish.
  • Decking lights: Consider adding decking lights to create a beautiful atmosphere at night. These are also a great addition for steps, to help people see them in the dark.

Installation

When it comes to installing your composite decking, you have options. If you're not confident with DIY, it might be worth hiring a professional to ensure everything is installed correctly. However, if you're handy with tools, you might want to take on the project yourself.

We have a detailed step-by-step installation guide, but here are a few key things to keep in mind before you start:

  • Prepare the ground: Make sure the area is level and clear of debris. For raised decks, ensure proper drainage and stability.
  • Substructure: Use treated timber or composite joists to create a strong frame. Be sure to follow the recommended joist spacing for your decking boards.
  • Account for expansion: Composite decking expands and contracts with temperature changes, so leave small gaps between boards and at the edges.
  • Tools and installation: Basic tools like a circular saw, drill, measuring tape, and a spirit level will be required. Eurocell decking can be fixed with hidden clips or screws for a clean and secure finish.

Maintenance

One of the main benefits of composite decking is that it is very low maintenance, especially compared to timber. However, a little care goes a long way to keep your deck looking great for years.

Cleaning your deck

To keep your composite decking clean, simply sweep away debris regularly and wash it down with soapy water a couple of times a year. For tougher stains or spills, use a mild cleaner or a soft brush to gently scrub the surface. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the board’s finish.

Additional maintenance tips

  • Prevent mould and mildew: Regular cleaning prevents build-up of dirt, which can cause mould or mildew to develop in damp conditions.
  • Stains: Spills like food, drink, or grease can be cleaned off easily with warm water and mild soap.
  • Winter care: During colder months, make sure your deck is clear of snow or ice. Use a plastic shovel to prevent scratches and damage.
