Tyre Safety Month

12th October 2020

TyreSafe is asking Britain’s motorists Are your tyres ready for Action? as the curtain raises on the October-long Tyre Safety Month campaign.

According to TyreSafe, every year 170 motorists on average are reported killed or seriously injured due to incidents caused by tyre-related defects (which is more than those attributed to mobile phone use). However, one-in-five drivers have never checked their tyres.

Tyre maintenance can not only reduce the risk of an incident, but can also help save money. Under-inflated tyres use more fuel as well as increasing how quickly tyres wear.

There are three things you should check on your tyres – tread, pressure and condition

Tyre Tread check

The legal limit for cars is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band across the central ¾ of the tyre. If the minimum is not met, drivers can face a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre that don’t meet these requirements.

The tread is what helps remove water from between the road and the tyre in wet weather, which gives grip.

Vans and LCV’s are subject to the same tyre law as cars so they must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre around its entire circumference.

Whilst 1.6mm is difficult to imagine, there is an easy check that can be done with a 20p. Simply insert the 20p into the groove. If you can’t see any of the outer band then your tyres are fine. If you can, it’s likely they are less than 1.6mm.

Tyre pressure

Correctly inflated tyres give you the optimal amount of contact with the road to give you the grip and control you need. If tyres are over or under inflated then handling and grip will worsen, which could cause unpredictable behaviour.

Tyre pressures can be found:
•In the handbook
•Inside the door sill
•Inside the fuel cap

Tyre condition

Check your tyres to ensure there are no lumps or bumps, or exposed wires sticking out.
