Frequently Asked Questions
Is PVC-U sustainable?
Yes, UPVC is one of the most sustainable architectural materials available. It is ideally suited for the manufacture of doors and window sills and frames. As well as being recyclable, UPVC is also inherently environmentally friendly because of the applications in which it is used. In the UK, it is commonly used for double glazing windows – which play a key role in minimising the carbon footprint of homes across the country. UPVC windows and doors also require no toxic repainting or harmful chemicals to keep them clean.
How long do PVC-U windows last?
Investing in UPVC windows is a prudent, long-term decision. All of our Eurocell UPVC windows come with a minimum 10-year guarantee. Some ranges have an even longer guarantee! So whichever UPVC windows you choose, you can enjoy long-lasting peace of mind.
Is PVC-U recyclable?
Most UPVC windows are guaranteed for at least 10 years, but the real-world lifespan is normally considerably longer. Sustainable architecture studies have found that, given proper care and maintenance, the average UPVC installation should last 20-35 years. A minimal need for replacements is another positive factor in the sustainability credentials of UPVC.
What is the difference between PVC-U and PVC windows?
The ‘U’ in PVC-U stands for unplasticised. PVC windows use softening plasticisers to increase the flexibility of the material; PVC-U windows do not. Materials that use plasticisers tend to typically have a shorter lifespan, and offer poorer heat resistance, than those that do not. So PVC-U is the superior choice in both cases.
