Part Q lock down
The Government has announced its intention to introduce a single security standard applied to all new homes through a conventional mandatory building regulation requirement. This new standard will be known as Building Regulations Approved Document Q.
The legislation means that windows and doors must be manufactured to a design that has been tested to meet the security requirements of standards that are specified in Part Q, including PAS 24, LPS 1175 and LPS 2081.
Part Q (Approved Document Q – Security – Dwellings) takes effect on 1 October and will state that the building must be designed and constructed in such a way that it adequately resists both unauthorised access from outside the building; and unauthorised access from within the building, for example, to a block of flats.
Windows and doorsets demonstrating compliance with the police Secured by Design initiative will also have to meet the provisions of Approved Document Q, which means both new and replacement windows.
We are currently having a number of window and door specifications tested so that our fabricators and installers will be in a position to offer Part Q and Secured by Design-compliant solutions from 1 October 2015.
Ian Kernaghan, Product Manager at Eurocell, said: “With more homeowners looking to beat the burglar and with the forthcoming Part Q of the Building Regulations, we are confident that our customers will be ready for the 1 October deadline.”

A seismic shift in perception!
We staged a RIBA CPD (Continued Professional Development) seminar in London recently that was attended by a large number of architects. The seminar provided an overview of PVC-U sustainability and the other benefits of the material such as energy efficiency and low maintenance, specifically relating to Modus.
Many architects still have negative perceptions of PVC-U, which is why it was so refreshing to hear that Modus is starting to win them over! Here is a selection of feedback that our telemarketing company received when they spoke to the attendees after the event:
Jim Biek – Architect at Bchitecture
Would now consider PVC-U and wouldn’t have prior to the event.
George Athayasi – Architect, GLA Architecture & Design Ltd
Very good presentation, it did positively change his opinion of PVC-U for the better and will now consider specifying on the right sort of projects.
Francis Bradley – Surveyor, Highdorn
Thought presentation went well and was very informative, for example, he was not aware that PVC-U can be recycled up to 10 times, reinforced his positive opinion on the product under the right circumstances – Mr Bradley also commented he recognised the Eurocell brand as a Market Leader.
Danny Earls – Project Management, London Borough of Southwark
Eurocell is seen as the future in this sector as they are developing all the time and have a good recycle record.
Peter Schmitt – Chartered Architect, Vitru Vius Britannicus
Peter said he was 200% against PVC U prior to the event and now would consider it under the right circumstances. He added the insulating value is excellent as are the recycling credentials. Very impressed!
We’re attending a series of other RIBA CPD events around the country over the next few months – with the aim of gaining specification for Eurocell products and systems – and will keep you up to date of how these go!
YourPad has options for Wakefield homeowner
YourPad – the virtual improvement app – has helped a Wakefield family transform their home into something extra-ordinary!
Along with a full set of Eurologik windows, property owner Mrs Bidford selected a perfectly colour-matched range of Eurocell products using YourPad, including two Aspect bi-fold doors, French doors and a rear entrance door! All the products were supplied in perfectly colour matched Irish Oak and installed by fabricator Wakefield Trade Windows.
Being able to use YourPad proved to be exactly the right approach for this discerning homeowner. In fact, they found YourPad so easy to use that they soon forgot about their initial concerns about the potential disruption caused by replacing their windows and doors.
The Bidford family downloaded YourPad from Apple App Store, took a photograph of the house using their tablet and then simply dragged and dropped different window and door combinations and colours until they found the one that they liked best – simple! The great thing about that was the homeowner had already sold themselves the idea of changing all their windows and doors before they even visited a showroom!
Wakefield Trade Windows said: “We like dealing with Eurocell because it allows us to source everything from the one company. It’s an added bonus when products such as Eurologik windows and Aspect bi-folding doors lead their respective categories. Add to that the constant stream of innovative new products, plus YourPad and you’ve got everything you need to help property owners create extra-ordinary homes.”
